Pointing to the Sun and Laughing, 2025
by Anderson Matthew
"Pointing to the Sun and Laughing" is a short film based on the poetry of Italian-born author Giulia Bencivenga. These poems interrogate the nature of episteme, of yearning. The words— spoken, in part, by Bencivenga herself— are rendered with the same clarity as the ambient sounds of a woman thinking, pacing. Through its experimental use of rhythm and looping, the film invokes a kind of emotional turn like the enjambment of the lines of a poem. This turning on itself reaches its crescendo with a rapturous use of color. A movie caught between dream and memory told through intimate whispers.

Grid, 2021

A ritual of grids, reflections and chasms; a complete state of entropy; a space that devours itself; a vertigo that destroys the gravity of the Earth; a trap that captures us inside the voids of the screen of light: «That blank arena wherein converge at once the hundred spaces» (Hollis Frampton).
